VV ECMO can be performed with different cannulation strategies. Veno-Venous ECMO cannulation is commonly performed percutaneously with ultrasound guidance using Seldinger technique although surgical cut down may occasionally be required. Echocardiography or fluroscopy are used to confirm wire placement and cannula position. The access cannula is usually placed in the inferior vena cava via the femoral vein.


VV – ECMO circuits usually include the cannulation of two vessels (double cannulation ) in the classic configuration, the use of a single cannula is now possible for VV – ECMO support. All staff undergo regular training, accreditation, supervision, and practice including in the animal lab to ensure the procedure is done in a standardised manner to minimize the potential risk to patients.
